This is a bit of a odd western. Stars Dustin Hoffman as a white man adopted by the Natives as a child and raised as one of their own. The story leads to the battle at Little Big Horn. The film has some very funny moments and great characters. Dustin Hoffman is quite good in this. Worth checking out if you enjoy westerns.

Dustin Hoffman turns out a great but overlooked performance as a 121 year-old man who tells his life story. Little Big Man is a good movie but has a tone that changes way too much for its own good. It hits everything from black comedy to slapstick to heartbreaking. Just like with the movie Little Big Man is a precursor to, Dances With Wolves, I felt completely ashamed to be white. The Bill Hicock scenes were too few but at the same time great. Chief Dan George was amazing and had some of the best lines ("does she show pleasant enthusiasm when you mount her?"), the gay Indian/Native American (whatever your pleasure) was great and Faye Dunaway was very entertaining for the few brief moments she was in this movie.

one of the most unusual westerns ever made and one of my favorite films as a kid. starring dustin hoffman as a supposedly 121 yr old man, the only white survivor of the battle of the little big horn. ranging from black comedy to drama to slapstick humor and back, it's alot of fun and has held up pretty well over 30 odd years. one of the first films to address the issue of native american rights as well

This movie gets a big reception by a lot of viewers, and I'm guessing it mostly comes from a sense of nostalgia and an ability to look beyond the obvious flaws. This movie had a very hard time deciding if it was going to be a comedy or a drama, which is usually not a bad thing for movies but this one messes it up a bit. We bounce wildly from event to event, where every happening is a crazy coincidence. When the end of the movie does come, it comes at a seemingly strange place and leaves us wondering what exactly happened next. At times it felt somewhat demoralizing. However, certain inspiring parts of the movie hold up well, which is why I give this movie that extra star.

I think i agree with another flixster member on here who said this is one of the most underrated Westerns ever. On the same line as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly the story has different Genres combined in one but with a more heart whelming ending and message through out the movie. Hoffman has always been one of my favorite actors and i would put him above such actors as De Niro and Al Pacino who many seem to think of first when greatest actor comes up. It's like watching Shawshank Redemption but a western version. Maybe not the best example but in some ways it lifts your spirit up even though it can be a bit depressing, violent and heartbreaking at times. The way the story flows and the way the movie was done works so well and you don't feel it as the 2 hours or so fly by. This is definitely of the best movies I have seen and I recommend it highly to anyone.
